“You can be tortured by your own nightmares, and the most evil thing can even be inside the nicest of people.” Nicolas Bruno has suffered from sleep paralysis since he was seven years old, and by the time he was 15 it was happening every night.
By keeping a dream journal, Bruno was able to decode his dreams into symbols, and recreate them through photography. “Water is a huge element in my work. Being below water symbolises being asleep, and above the water symbolised being awake. That expresses the feeling of being in sleep paralysis, which is when you’re stuck between being awake and asleep.”
To create these photos, Bruno set his camera up on a tripod and shot on an interval timer, which meant he was able to appear multiple times in the same photograph, changing costumes and moving props; he then stitched the images together afterwards.
